| It seems that every ethnic group has its own area in NYC, every group,
except the Austrians. Not that there are so many of them in New York, but
it would be nice to have an area where you can get many of the Austrian
products and find ethnic restaurants. Unfortunately, there is no such area,
and so it can be really hard to find Austrian products in the city that
is supposed to have everything. Since it used to drive me NUTS, especially in the first year, to try and track down Austrian food or just ingredients that you find everywhere in Austria but which are rare in NY, I've decided to list some of the places that carry some of the good stuff from back home... Also, I'm going to add some other useful information here on Austrian stuff, as well as links and recipes with alternative ingredients. The list is not complete, I'll add stuff as I find it. Please e-mail me if you have any interesting additions! |

STEINHOF 422 7th Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11215 tel. (718) 369 7776 |
This cute and very cozy little cafe
in Park Slope (around 13th Street) serves Austrian food at really good prices.
The Gulasch and the Wiener Schnitzel were excellent, the Cheese
Spaetzle a little disappointing. The owner is Austrian and also owns
the "Max and Moritz" further down on 7th Avenue, but from what
I saw they don't serve Austrian food there. I can really recommend the Cafe Steinhof, it's a nice place with pretty good food for the occasional Schnitzel & Co cravings! |
